I’ve known Karen Gallagher-Burt, otherwise known as KGB, for a number of years now thanks to my previous role in community investment. In the relatively short time that I’ve known Karen, I’ve known her as a generous soul, one who laughs freely, a woman who has fostered 44 children, has the most incredible two biological children, and to see her with her husband is to see the kind of marriage that I aspire to.
Karen currently works with the United Way of Calgary and Area as the Team Manager for Campaign Engagement, and her resume is filled with roles in the nonprofit sector, both paid and voluntary. She has seemingly endless energy, giving to those in need, be they family, friends, or individuals in need of a coat, as you’ll come to learn.
Karen and I talk about her experience as a Mother of Many, fostering over 40 children, how she learned to deal with judgement, the most important words to say when in conflict with a loved one, the importance of humanity in face of poverty, and where she sees the nonprofit sector going.

We talk about the SOS team which is provided by the Canadian Association of Mental Health. If you’re interested in supporting their work, click here to donate. Whether it’s $5 or $50, I’d be so honoured to hear of the GTL listeners supporting their cause.
We talk about her personal mission, and darned if I didn’t cry when editing the episode and re-listening to that section.

Karen’s Favourite Quotes
We talk a lot about gratitude, appreciating the little things and putting yourself into life, so I really appreciated one of Karen’s favourite quotes by Arthur Rubinstein.
If you enjoyed Karen’s story as much as I did, please share this post with those who you think will resonate with her experience.
Next podcast episode will be on July 6th with YouTube Fitness Instructor, Lucy Wyndham-Read.
