Today on the podcast I’m honoured to be joined by Janis Irwin, MLA for Edmonton Highlands-Norwood with the NDP. I’ve been blown away by Janis’ passion and commitment to women and LGBTQ2S+ issues in Alberta, and how we can lift each other up.
Janis shares how she got into politics from her background in education, how we can get more women into politics, how she manages the stress associated with public roles, and most importantly the value of authenticity both in politics and life in general.

As I say at the beginning of the episode, I have no doubts that many of my listeners vote differently than I do. We’ve had such a diverse group of guests on this podcast. I don’t expect us all to think the same, act the same or vote the same.
What I do hope is that you keep an open mind as you listen. I believe many of the themes are important regardless of how you vote. Getting women into politics matters across the board, as does accessible childcare. When we support women, we support economies – that’s true regardless of political affiliation.
And my last shout out… if you want to see change, get involved. Write to your elected representative. Vote. Volunteer. Donate. Do whatever makes the most sense for you, but from a stress standpoint taking some action will make you feel better.
Big thanks to Janis for sharing her time with us.
